Workshop Descriptions

List of 8 items.

  • Biology (New & Experienced Teachers)

Participants will learn about the AP Biology Curriculum Framework, how to incorporate inquiry into the AP Biology curriculum, and perform selected laboratory investigations, and share ideas for implementing these activities in the classroom. We will conduct laboratories that will satisfy the requirement for 25% of the AP Biology course to be laboratory-based. Yes--even in a virtual teaching world, we will do labs! Some lab materials will be mailed to you.

We will take a deep dive into the 2023 AP Biology exam, trends and patterns noticed in student responses, and strategies for improving student performance through intentional instructional design. There will be time allotted for teachers to work on syllabus development and lesson design. Participants will also learn strategies for making their courses accessible for all students through creation of equitable learning environments and equitable course design.

You’ll also learn about completing the digital activation process at the start of the school year that will give you immediate access to the new resources and will help ensure that your students can register for AP Exams by the new fall deadlines.

By attending this APSI, you’ll gain deeper insight into the following key takeaways, among several others: Understand the Course; Plan the Course; Teach the Course; Assess Student Progress; and Engage as a Member of the AP Community. In addition, specific attention will be paid to the following AP Classroom resources: unit guides, personal progress checks, AP teacher community, and the AP question bank. Teachers will leave prepared to successfully teach AP Biology, including audit approval, College Board curriculum alignment, and preparing students for the AP Biology exam.

There will be two AP Economics workshops geared towards the varying needs of different teachers. Each will focus on the CollegeBoard course descriptions as the basis of the week’s activities while also providing insight on the AP exam development and grading. The two course-specific weeks will present the fundamental content of each respective course with extra time devoted to lesson plan development. All workshops will emphasize varying instruction, effective assessment strategies, and incorporation of technology and economic simulations consistent with the given curriculum, as well as an in-depth examination of the CED and AP Classroom resources.
  • World History (New & Experienced Teachers)

World History is a relatively new discipline and its methodology differs considerably from other approaches to history. This workshop is based on the philosophy that understanding the conceptual structure of the course and the interaction of its component parts is essential to creating effective lessons and assessments in the classroom.  After briefly outlining the “architecture” of AP World History, we will consider proven lesson plans and how they serve as models for creating quality activities in the classroom. Teachers will leave with ready-to-go classroom materials, tech tools, curriculum guides, and assessment items as well as the informed ability to develop these on their own. A significant part of the week will be devoted to teaching the skills necessary for the writing component of the exam with special attention to recent changes in the rubric and essay prompts.

The laboratory component will provide participants the opportunity to conduct guided inquiry laboratories and hands-on activities with traditional laboratory equipment as well as Vernier Lab Quest. Teachers will become part of a collaborative environment that fosters sharing of AP Chemistry teaching methodologies. Participants will receive materials such as CollegeBoard manuals, sample notes, test bank, homework and laboratory exercises that can be immediately and easily integrated into their teaching of the AP Chemistry curriculum.
