Experienced Teachers are those who have been teaching AP in that subject for 3+ years or who have attended a previous APSI in the same subject.

2012 APSI Course Descriptions Art History (New & Experienced Teachers) This workshop will prepare high school teachers of all experience levels to teach AP Art History. Topics will include course pacing, books, modeling ways of using historical methods (particularly social context), new technology, relevance to students’ lives and writing and assessing art history tests. Topics will be developed in response to the interests and needs of teachers attending the workshop. |

 Biology (New & Experienced Teachers) This Institute will focus on the new AP Biology course, ensuring that participants understand the curriculum framework and the new exam in detail. Participants will share ideas for improving student achievement and receive suggestions on how to develop a syllabus for the new course, including details regarding the audit process. Textbook selection, equipment suggestions, and ordering information will also be discussed. In addition, a significant amount of time will be spent on the different models of inquiry, including the four levels of inquiry, incorporating inquiry into the AP Biology classroom, and transforming traditional labs to inquiry labs, as well as on instructional design and assessment. Participants will receive CollegeBoard manuals, textbooks, and resource catalogs as well as instruction on conducting the new AP Biology inquiry-based labs. |

 Calculus AB (New & Experienced Teachers) & BC (New & Experienced Teachers - Calculus AB Experience Recommended) Both courses are for those who will teach the AP courses or have taught them for a few years. Topics taught in the AB and BC curriculum will be discussed. A feature will be incorporating technology in the teaching of AP Calculus. Calculator active questions will be discussed. Participants should bring a graphics calculator. Mr. Stadler will use a TI-84 plus graphics calculator. |

 English Literature and Composition (New Teachers) This course is for those who intend to teach AP English Literature and Composition or have taught it for one or two years. The focus will be on developing a syllabus, understanding the AP Audit process, teaching poetry, short fiction, and drama, improving students’ composition skills, practicing techniques which promote critical thinking, answering multiple choice questions, and the grading of the AP Exam. Participants will develop lesson plans to share and receive textbooks, sample units, and samples from previous AP English Literature and Composition exams. |

 Government and Politics: U.S. (Experienced Teachers) This course is designed for those who have been teaching AP Government for several years. The course will discuss current topics, as well as the changing demands of the course. Participants will exchange ideas on teaching strategies, teaching techniques, and lesson plans. There will also be discussion on the AP Audit. Participants will receive sample units, textbooks, and review the scoring and rationales of the 2012 AP Government Exam. |

 Government and Politics: U.S. (New Teachers) This course is for new AP teachers. It will examine current teaching methods and evaluate teaching styles for diverse learners. This course will also examine the role of technology, scheduling strategies and strategies for the Free Response section of the AP exam. |

 U.S. History (New Teachers) This course is for those who intend to teach AP U.S. History or have taught it for one or two years. It will focus on organizing a course, developing a syllabus, selecting students, choosing textbooks/sources, writing test questions, using media, and the expectations of the AP Reading. Participants will create units, slide sets on art/architecture, and address changes in the test content.

2012 APSI Course Instructors' Biographies Dr. Michael Bieze Michael Bieze has taught at Marist for 26 years. He has served as an AP Art History Development Committee Member, AP reader, table leader, exam leader, conducted workshops (including online) and summer institutes across the country, represented the program at the CollegeBoard National Conference and Workshop, and written several articles for the program. Michael has published several works including two books on Booker T. Washington. |

 Mr. Tony Cordell Tony Cordell has been teaching at Marist School for 31 years. He has taught AP U.S. History and has been teaching AP U.S. Government and Politics for 16 years. He has also taught seminars on Current American Policy and Civil Liberties/Rights. Tony has served as an AP reader for 14 years, a table leader for nine years, and is currently an AP Consultant, conducting workshops and seminars. In addition, he is on the McGraw-Hill Advisory Board for the AP Government interactive learning project. |

 Dr. Louisa Moffitt Louisa Moffitt has taught AP U.S. History at Marist School for the past 26 years. She has served as an AP reader, table leader, and exam leader for the AP U.S. History reading. She just completed her term as Assistant Chief Reader for this exam. In addition, she has been a member of the AP U.S. History Test Development Committee. She is a CollegeBoard Consultant and National Leader for the AP U.S. History Program. |

 Mrs. Gigi Muirheid Gigi Muirheid has taught AP English for 26 years at Marist School. She has served as an AP reader and table leader for 15 years and presently serves as a CollegeBoard Consultant, leading workshops in the Southeast region. |

 Mr. Sergio Stadler Sergio Stadler has taught AP Calculus at Marist School for 37 years. He has been the co-author of multiple choice questions for Louis Leithold’s Calculus textbook. He has been an AP reader and table leader for the AP Calculus exam, authored TIP’s Advanced Placement Calculus AB manual, and been an Atlanta Teaching Fellow at TIP’s Summer Residential Program. He has been a CollegeBoard Consultant and an instructor of summer institutes. |

 Mrs. Audra Brown Ward Audra Brown Ward has taught AP Biology at Marist School for seven years. Audra is an AP reader and CollegeBoard Consultant; she has led workshops at CollegeBoard Summer Institutes, Teaching and Learning Conferences and NABT Conferences. She received the 2007 NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Georgia and was a 2009-2010 American Physiological Society Frontiers in Physiology Fellow. Audra has contributed to various teacher guides and ancillaries for AP Biology textbooks. She has recently been involved in the development of the CollegeBoard's Materials for Professional Workshops and was a reviewer for the 2012 edition of the AP Biology Lab Manual for Students published by the CollegeBoard. |

2012 APSI General Information | Fees:
Total payment is due with application. An 80% refund is available up to two weeks before the class starting date. All fees must be paid in full before class begins. Refunds will not be given for “no shows”. There is no deadline for registration, but class sizes are limited. A registration confirmation will be sent via email. PLU credit will be given.
General:
Institute fees include classroom instruction, CollegeBoard materials, 2012 AP reading information and sample essays, teacher designed lesson plans, sample textbooks, light breakfast and snacks Monday through Friday, and lunch Monday through Thursday.
Housing:
Housing will not be available on site. A block of rooms has been reserved at the nearby Hilton Garden Inn at Atlanta Perimeter Center for $99 per night. Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-445-8667 or 404-459-0500. Be sure to mention you are affiliated with the Marist AP Summer Institute. To guarantee a room, reservations must be made by June 15 for the June 18-22 session; by June 22 for the June 25-28 session; and by July 6 for the July 9-13 session. Free shuttle service is available to Marist from the hotel. |
