Marist Latinists Go to State
Marist Latin students faced stiff competition at the Junior Classical League state convention held April 18-20 at Rock Eagle. Forty Georgia schools sent some 950 delegates for the competitions in academics, creative and graphic arts, as well as field games.

The following Marist students earned first place in their level of Latin: Patrick Lanier (Latin Literature), Carson Evans (Latin Literature, Vocabulary), and Patrick Miller (Latin Derivatives, Greek Derivatives, Reading Comprehension, Mythology). Other delegates placing in the top five were: Ben Belden (Latin Literature), Brady Brown (Latin Literature), Ryan Casserly (Reading Comprehension), David Connolly (Reading Comprehension), Avery Daniel (Reading Comprehension), Carson Evans (Advanced Grammar), Patrick Miller (Latin Derivatives, Latin Literature, Advanced Grammar, Roman History, Vocabulary, Roman Life), Max Mujica (Latin Literature), Paul Nguyen (Reading Comprehension), and Emily Fawcett (Latin Derivatives). The upper level Certamen team (Travis Coberly, Brady Brown, William Costabile, Patrick Lanier, and captain Patrick Miller) took first place in an impressive final round against rivals Walton and Eastside.

In Graphic Arts, Ashton Moss took first place for his large model of the Basilica Julia. Marist historian Margot Hillyer earned second place for her chapter scrapbook. Paul Nguyen earned third place for his colorful poster. Emily Fusco and J.P. McKenzie placed 4th and 5th in charts. In Creative Arts, Kevin McDaniel placed 4th in Dramatic Interpretation and Carson Evans placed first in Latin Composition. In the talent show Kasey O'Haren won third place for her gymnastics routine. Marist placed first in publicity for its publication of JCL activities.

Senior Patrick Miller, President of the Georgia Junior Classical League, presided over the general assemblies, which included spirit rallies, elections, and awards. Patrick earned a cash prize for achieving the highest score (tie) in the Academic Decathlon and placed 2nd in the state overall in Academics. In addition, Patrick was honored at a luncheon as one of the nominees for the Georgia Classical Association Student of the Year. Patrick moderated the Teachers’ Certamen match and bestowed the President's Award on Marist JCL sponsors Mr. Thomas Marier and Dr. Anne Washington Saunders.

Other participants in the Olympika, Ludi basketball, spirit parade, bazaar, and banquet included the following: Kelsey Allman, Hunter Bailey, Matthew Burke, Hannah Costabile, Nathan Daniel, Penn Davenport, Lizzy Davis, Elizabeth Easton, Kevin Guebert, Caroline Jordan, Danny Knotts, Taisha Likes, Shannon McNulty, Matt Miller, Thad Owings, Elizabeth Pitts, Colleen Quinn, Hae Sin, Emma Torpy, Alex Whelan, and Katie Wood.
