 | 3.2 Absence
Regularity in attendance and diligent application to study are essential for achievement. Students missing a portion of the school day will be marked absent for the number of periods missed. Six periods missed is considered the same as one full day of absence.
3.2.1 Absence:
A parent must call the Attendance Office before 8:30 a.m. each day a student is absent. The following information should be reported when calling in an absence: name, grade level, phone number at which the parent can be reached, and reason for the absence. A student reported absent by a parent is not to be on campus for any reason without prior approval of the Dean of Students. Absent students who come on campus will be considered out-of-bounds. Papers or other assignments will not be accepted at the front desk from students who are on the absentee list. Please refer to your course syllabus regarding late and make-up work for your individual course. Do not send faxes regarding same day absences.
|
3.2.2 Delayed Arrival/Early Dismissal/Future Absence/ Personal Days:
Requests for delayed arrival, early dismissal, or future absence should be made in writing by the parents to the Dean of Students. Such requests should be received at least one day in advance. All requests must include a telephone number at which the parent can be reached, student’s name, grade level, and reason for the request. Normally, no student will be granted early dismissal without a written request from a parent. Requests may also be faxed to the Attendance Office at 770-825-9027. Future absence that will require a student to miss more than one day of school should be received in writing at least one week in advance of the planned absence. When the request is submitted, a planned absence form will be provided to the student by the Dean of Students. The student will then bring the planned absence form to his/her teachers for their signature. Failure to do so may result in unexcused absences for the days missed. As it contributes to achieving our mission through the pursuit of academic excellence, Marist School values classroom time for students. Because of this, Marist School expects students to be present in class whenever possible. Other than illness, appointments, college visits, or unforeseen circumstances, students should be in class on a daily basis. Personal days for travel or extracurricular activities are limited to six days per year and no more than three days per term. A request for an exception to this policy should be submitted to in writing thirty days in advance to the Dean of Students. It is the responsibility of the student to notify his/ her teachers by providing them a Planned Absence Form for their signature. Furthermore, it is also the responsibility of the student to make up all tests, quizzes, and assignments in a timely manner with the guidance of the teacher.
|
3.2.3 Check-In/Check-Out:
Parents should notify the Attendance Office as soon as possible if a student is to arrive late or leave school early due to an appointment. This notification can be made by phone- 770-936-2233, email- attendance@marist.com, or by fax-770-825-9027. Any time a student leaves school early, arrives late, or returns to school after an appointment, he or she must report to the Dean of Students’ Office to sign out or sign in. Failure to do so may result in an incorrect attendance recording for the student as well as disciplinary action. Parents do not need to come to the Dean of Students/Attendance Office when checking a student in or out of school. The student will be released at the arranged time to meet his/her parent/guardian in the circle.
|
3.2.4 Effect of Absence on Activity Participation:
Students who are absent, arrive late (45 minutes after the first class has begun), or leave school early because of illness may not practice or participate in after-school activities on that day. Students must attend all classes and religious services during the school day to participate in after-school or evening activities. Medical appointments are an exception. Other exceptions must be approved by the Dean of Students or the Principal and conveyed to the coach or moderator. A student may not participate in a Marist extracurricular activity after having missed class that day due to a personal (non-Marist) activity, unless authorized by the Dean of Students or the Principal.
|
3.2.5 Effect of Absence on Academic Credit/ Extended Absence:
In order to facilitate the remediation of a student suffering from an extended illness, as defined below, whether medical or personal, parents must consent and authorize the release of information from the doctor or therapist to Marist School. The sole purpose of the release and consultation is to aid members of the Marist faculty, specifically involved with the individual student, to better understand the attendance expectations and the physical or mental limitations of the student which may inhibit the student's normal performance. Any information attained will be shared only in efforts to achieve this purpose. Marist School defines an extended absence as one in which a student is absent for five consecutive days or a total of eight days in a term.
|
3.2.6 College Visitation:
To plan college selection, seniors are permitted three days of excused absence and juniors are permitted two days beginning Term II of their junior year. No visits will be authorized during the week prior to final exams or in conjunction with school holidays. Visits must normally be concluded by the beginning of Term III of the twelfth grade. |

Attendance on exam days is required, and students are expected to take exams according to the dates and times of the exam schedule. A student should report to homeroom or to class no more than two minutes after leaving the Dean of Students’ Office. Students who receive an unexcused tardy for any reason will be assigned cafeteria duty for that day. Failure to report will result in additional consequences. Excessive tardies by juniors or seniors may result in the loss of on-campus parking privileges, open campus privileges, or junior study hall privileges.
On the fifth tardy of any term, a detention will be assigned. If the tardies continue, additional detentions or demerits may be assigned. The school reserves the right to consider all members of a car pool tardy, even if the tardy is caused by only one individual in the car pool. Tardies are considered unexcused unless accompanied by a doctor’s note. |
3.3.1 Late for Class:
Ample time is provided to proceed from class to class. Any student who is late to a class should go to the classroom, not to the Dean of Students’ Office. Teachers may treat class tardiness according to their classroom policies. The time between classes should not be used for student/ teacher conferences. A student who is late to any class by more than twenty-five minutes will be recorded absent for the full class period.
3.3.2 Signing in Late:
A student who signs in late to school, but has been seen on campus whether
in the library or the computer lab, is not only tardy, but is considered out of

Juniors, however, are required to report to study hall in the upper cafeteria in the first hour of the day on any day that does not begin with homeroom. Seniors and juniors in study hall are not permitted anywhere inside the classroom buildings. The library, computer lab, cafeteria, arcade, courtyard, and plaza are available.
|
3.4.2 Seniors Delayed Arrival/Early Leaving During Study Hall:
Seniors who have a study hall during the first hour of the school day need not report to school for that hour or for homeroom preceding it. Seniors must sign in with the Dean of Students in room C216. Seniors who fail to sign in to school may lose that privilege or may receive demerits for failure to report. Seniors who have a study hall during the last hour of the school day need not remain at school after their last class. While juniors need not report to study hall as noted in 3.4.1, they may not leave the campus during that time.
|
