The Marist Way

The Mission

The Marist Way is a vehicle for helping communities related to the Society of Mary to comprehend and embody the full meaning of the term “Marist,” through prayer, learning, service, fellowship and vocational development.

The Vision

The Marist Way initiative is based on a vision set forth in 1816 by the founders of the Society of Mary, seeking to bring people to Christ through spreading the Gospel and through an appreciation of the role of Mary in the Scriptures and in the church. The Marist Way seeks to enrich Marist-related communities with a fuller understanding of the history and special mission of the Society of Mary, and it seeks to maximize the impact that such a charism can have on those who share it.

The Core Values

From Father Colin:

· Hidden and unknown
· Being instruments of mercy
· Discipleship
· Trust in God
· “tasting God”
· Doing “the work of Mary”
· Saying “no” to greed, pride, and power
· The spirit of Nazareth and Pentecost
· Being called by “gracious choice”

From the Society of Mary Constitutions:

· Ardent love of neighbor
· Union with God
· Self-denial
· Humility

From the Marist tradition:

· Hospitality
· Inclusion
· service

Marist’s unique mission is derived from the aims and efforts of the Marists but depend on the cooperation of so many others who believe in what the Society of Mary stands for and wish to promote its way of living a Marian life in an active, apostolic context.

Please contact the director of The Marist Way at maristway@marist.com or at 770-936-2245 for more information about how you can become involved in the Marist Way, or how you can receive information about history of the Society of Mary and Marist spirituality.

Crucifix Project

Marist School is currently involved in a long-term project to place a unique crucifix or cross in every classroom of the school building. There are approximately seventy classrooms, and we are halfway to our goal. We would like to have as many ethnic groups and cultures represented as possible, while trying to avoid duplicate submissions.

We are looking for representations of our Catholic faith in crucifixes and crosses that have cultural and/or ethnic significance. Special emphasis for classroom placement is on crucifixes (crosses with the figure of Jesus). If possible, please include a brief history of the cross.

Submissions will be reviewed by our committee in order to ensure that they meet the following criteria:

Crucifixes/Crosses must be:

  1. Between 15 and 24 inches tall
  2. Have artistic merit representative of some national or ethnic heritage or tradition, different from the standard examples of crucifixes
  3. Without jewel ornamentation
  4. Include description/history (ethnic or cultural origin) for accompanying plaque, if available

Questions: Contact Teresa Gaskin 404-841-8274 or
Sharon Bowman 404-851-9605 for more information.
