Marist students recently explored the “Framing the Presidency” exhibit in the Goizueta Center for Immersive Experience and Design in Wooldridge Center. The latest installation in the Immersive Theater, this exhibit was open to upper-level social studies and government classes, 10th graders taking the American Experiment course, and students studying marketing and world religion. It offered a dynamic, hands-on look at the themes and communication strategies that have shaped U.S. presidential campaigns over the past 50 years.

The exhibit featured engaging “campaign tunnels”, each meticulously designed to represent the media technologies of the 1976, 1984, 1992, and 2008 campaigns, from newspapers and projectors to laptops. Students adopted a voter persona, voting once before entering the tunnel filled with campaign messaging, and then voting once more upon exiting. Afterward, teachers facilitated a discussion on how the different media strategies and messaging influenced their voting decisions. Students reflected on how the evolving technologies and campaign techniques shaped their perceptions, encouraging deeper thought on the role of media in democracy and voter behavior.

Organized by Marist’s Global & Humane Studies Director Mrs. Kelly Crowe Mandy ’96 and inspired by Mrs. Jillian Bauersfeld, this thoughtful experience was brought to life with support from Fr. Frank Kissel, S.M., Ms. Anna Lee Lanning, Ms. Angela Williams, and the entire social studies department.

Nearly 100 Marist School students were eligible to vote for the first time in November’s general election, marking a pivotal moment in their journey as informed, compassionate citizens. At Marist, students are encouraged to engage thoughtfully with civic life—seeking meaningful dialogue and respect as they prepare to become leaders who will help shape the future of our democracy. Experiences like this prepare students to make a transformative impact on the world through the power of voting and service to others.
