A Message From Marist School President Fr. Bill Rowland, S.M.

It is heartbreaking for me to learn of the painful experiences that some Marist School students and alumni have shared on the BlackatMarist Instagram account, through direct emails to me, and at listening sessions that we held during the past school year. At our core, Marist values call on us to be intolerant of intolerance. I acknowledge with sadness the wrongs that have taken place in the past, and they serve as a reminder of the importance of our continued efforts to establish a school culture that is unambiguously opposed to any expressions of racism and bigotry on our campus. We are taking strong steps now to encourage positive systemic change surrounding inclusiveness in our school community and are working with cultural competency experts to help guide our next steps. Our actions will be transformative, and we intend to put processes in place to ensure they will be sustained for the long term, such as changes to policy and practice, curriculum, faculty and staff development, and student programming, including a focus on anti-racism for our summer reading program. More than ever before, we are committed to listening, learning, and acting so Marist can be the inclusive school community that our mission calls us to be.
