Marist School Celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and Commissions Students as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

On Tuesday, December 8, the Marist School community came together both in person and virtually to celebrate Mass for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mass also included the commissioning of 33 seniors as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
These seniors and their parents attended the Mass in person in Young Gym, while other students and teachers remained in their classrooms to view the Mass via livestream in order to maintain social distance.

After the seniors were commissioned, they served communion to their parents before fanning out to 33 different locations across campus to serve communion to teachers and fellow students.

Preparations for the Mass and commissioning began pre-pandemic, which was originally scheduled for the St. Peter Chanel Day Mass in April. Today’s Mass marked the first opportunity since then to have everyone on campus for Mass and the commissioning of the seniors.

Director of Campus Ministry Mr. Brian Freel said, “What a blessing to be able to honor the Blessed Mother in this way. We were able to celebrate the special grace that God bestowed on Mary at her Immaculate Conception, commission 33 seniors to serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, and invite parents to receive communion from their children, soon to be young adults.”

He added, “The whole community was enriched by this celebration, no matter how unusual the circumstances. In addition to God’s grace, there were a lot of wonderful people who contributed to making this Mass happen, and for that we can be grateful, even in the midst of the pandemic.”

The Mass was made possible by the collective efforts of the celebrants, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, facilities crew, campus ministers, volunteers, and those who worked behind the scenes, including student and teacher musicians and a production crew. Thank you to all who participated and assisted with the significant logistics of this special Mass, which honors the patroness of our school.
