Marist School Teacher Mr. José Gregory Named 2021 Georgia History Teacher of the Year

Mr. José Gregory, a social studies teacher at Marist School, has been named the 2021 Georgia History Teacher of the Year, an award presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to K-12 American history education.
In 2021, parents, students, teachers, and administrators nationwide nominated a record 8,510 teachers for the History Teacher of the Year Award. Amidst a very competitive field, Mr. Gregory rose to the top in Georgia.

Inaugurated in 2004, the History Teacher of the Year Award highlights the crucial importance of history education by honoring exceptional American history teachers from elementary school through high school. The award honors one K-12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools, and U.S. Territories. In fall 2021, the National History Teacher of the Year will be selected from the pool of state winners.

Mr. Gregory received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his juris doctor from University of Pennsylvania School of Law. He has worked as an AP U.S. History teacher for 18 years, attended the AP Reading since 2008, and served in a leadership position since 2017. As a College Board-endorsed consultant, Mr. Gregory facilitates workshops around the country. Prior to coming to Marist, he taught at DeKalb School of the Arts. In the classroom, Mr. Gregory strives to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of our nation’s narratives by focusing on historical content and thinking skills while exposing students to various perspectives.

Marist School Principal Kevin Mullally said, “We are pleased that the Gilder Lehrman Institute has recognized Mr. Gregory for his accomplishments in the classroom, which Marist students benefit from every day. Our teachers are our greatest resources, and Marist faculty like Mr. Gregory are the main way our students encounter our transformative mission and our academic program of excellence, both of which are hallmarks of the Marist experience.”

In addition to a $1,000 honorarium, Marist will receive a core archive of American history books and Gilder Lehrman educational materials and recognition at a ceremony in Georgia.
