Art History

Advanced Placement Art History

Welcome to Advanced Placement Art History at Marist School. The course is now entering its 23rd year at Marist and is open to the first 75 juniors or seniors who sign up for the class.

Art history is practiced in everyday life and is not an esoteric field of study only meant for specialists. In this spirit, there are several objectives for the course, including an emphasis on visual literacy and developing both critical thinking skills and an appreciation of works of art from cultures beyond the European tradition. Students also learn how art mediates a vast range of human experiences.

Over the years, students enrolled in the course have taken in part in a spring break trip to explore artistic expression abroad. In past years they have traveled to the China, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Ghana, India, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Poland, and Russia.
