2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award
Paul Muldawer ’50 has enjoyed a lauded and successful career in architecture and town planning for 55 years. He began practicing architecture in 1962 after completing a bachelor’s degree at the University of Florida and a master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied under Louis Kahn. He also studied traditional town planning and urban design at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.

Muldawer found his way to Marist after being disinvited from Grady High School for “excessive exuberance.” Father Dagneau, who patronized Muldawer’s father’s deli, was able to persuade Muldawer’s parents to send him to Marist College, then still on Ivy Street in downtown Atlanta. Muldawer thrived while at Marist, becoming a champion swimmer and an excellent student. In 2004, he was inducted into Marist’s Blue & Gold Athletic Circle for his swimming achievements.

Muldawer’s many professional accomplishments include an appointment by President Jimmy Carter to the United States Architectural and Transportation Barriers Board; founding of the Atlanta Urban Design Commission; conceptualization of Underground Atlanta; serving as Advisor Emeritus for the National Trust for Historic Preservation; and, election to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. Muldawer has an extensive background in Historic Preservation and Urban Design throughout the Southeastern and Northeastern United States. He designed the new City Hall Annex and restoration of the old City Hall Tower in Atlanta, Ga. and was architect for the City Hall and Civic Auditorium in Warner Robbins, Ga. Muldawer prepared the design for the 1977 Presidential Inaugural Reviewing Facilities for Jimmy Carter, and in 1981, he designed the Presidential Inaugural Media Pavilion for Ronald Reagan. Muldawer also designed Savannah’s historic preservation plan in 1970 and the comprehensive development plan for Suwanee, Ga.

Since 1993, Muldawer's practice has specialized in traditional town planning and mixed-use developments using principles of new urbanism. His professional endeavors have focused on sustainable development of greenfield areas and the revitalization of infill urban areas that have experienced decline in the past.

Muldawer has traveled extensively, observing cities with the "eye" of an architect/town planner, and has creatively photographed urban settings in Europe, the Baltic, the Greek Islands, and the United States. He has also documented new urbanist traditional neighborhood development in the southeast United States.

Muldawer and his wife Carol live in Buckhead. Carol Muldawer served in Ambassador Young’s Congressional Office and was his administrative assistant in the Mayor’s Office. Carol is a founding member of the PATH Foundation Board. Paul and Carol’s son, Alan, is a computer consultant in Washington, D.C. and their daughter, Elisa, is the vice president of sales and marketing at Soffee/Delta Apparel. Paul and Carol are the proud grandparents of Sydney, a junior at The University of Georgia Terry College of Business; Marria, a junior at Johns Creek High School; and Sean, a computer consultant in Maryland.
