Marist School Recognizes 2021-2022 Faculty and Staff Award Recipients

Ms. Beth Edwards (Math Teacher)
Archbishop’s Outstanding Service Award
The Archbishop’s Outstanding Service Award honors those who work in Catholic education throughout the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Each school in the Archdiocese recognizes one person who has made a difference in the fulfillment of their school’s mission and demonstrates an overall commitment to Catholic education.

Ms. Beth Edwards’ long-standing support to the mission of Marist School for more than 23 years has been a source of great benefit to her students, and her service as a department chair demonstrated the depth of her leadership and steadfast commitment to our mission. She is recognized with this award for the way she lives the Marist mission and advances the ministry of Catholic education.

Dr. Justin Horton (Business, Computer Science, & Engineering and English Teacher)
Tracy Faber Arra STEAM Grant
Part of the Faber-McKinley-Stadler Award, which is given every third year in rotation with the Rebecca Cox McKinley Humanities and Global Education Grant and the Stefanie and Sergio Stadler Arts and Student Development Grant, the Tracy Faber Arra STEAM Grant recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates professional excellence and a desire to grow in his or her discipline. 

Dr. Justin Horton will pursue professional development in documentary filmmaking to complement his work with the Global & Humane Studies Task Force in helping students cultivate empathy. This award recognizes the substantial contribution he has made to the student experience through broadcasting and filmmaking.

Ms. Josefina Mora (Housekeeping Staff Member)
Father Schmuhl Marist Service Award
The Father Schmuhl Marist Service Award recognizes a staff member who demonstrates Marist values, contributes significantly to the mission of Marist School, and promotes a strong sense of community among peers through collaborative efforts and style. 

Ms. Josefina Mora is a member of the housekeeping staff whose work begins when the school day ends. Along with her co-workers, she takes pride in ensuring that the school is clean and presentable. Like Fr. Schmuhl, Ms. Mora has an irrepressible joy about and enthusiasm for Marist School and the important role that the housekeeping staff contributes toward advancing the mission of a Marist education.

Mr. Jose Gregory (Social Studies Teacher)
Goizueta Chair of Excellence
The Goizueta Chair of Excellence recognizes innovative teaching, high standards of professional development, promotion of cross-cultural understanding and global interest, and involvement in student extracurricular activities.

This award recognizes Social Studies Teacher Mr. Jose Gregory for his commitment to advancing our mission through his teaching and moderating. He has promoted cross-cultural understanding in a variety of ways during his time at Marist including through both coursework and extracurriculars. Mr. Gregory’s Latin American Studies class went on to inspire the Latin American Studies Culture Club. Both the class and the club have raised awareness and celebrated Latin American history and culture at Marist School.

Mr. Michael Carroll (English Teacher; Football, Swimming, and Track & Field Coach)
Frank P. Hagan Memorial Coach’s Award
The Frank P. Hagan Memorial Coach’s Award honors a coach for his or her contribution to the Marist community and for inspiring in student-athletes growth and personal excellence through competition, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

This award recognizes Mr. Michael Carroll, a dedicated English teacher and coach, who has served the students and players of the Marist School community with love and fervor, challenging his student-athletes to aspire to excellence and helping to teach them the fundamentals of the sports that he loves. Whether his booming voice echoes from the granite seats of Hughes Spalding Stadium, the tiles of the pool deck, the rubber of the track, or the walls of his Ivy Street classroom, Mr. Carroll’s presence on the Marist campus has helped guide the young men and women who attend this school to not only learn and compete, but also to dedicate themselves fervently to all that they do for the betterment of their community.

Mrs. Carol Rivera (Science Teacher)
MacGinnitie Award for Innovation
The MacGinnitie Award for Innovation recognizes a faculty member whose initiative and innovation have made a recognizable difference in the education program, delivery of critical services, the school’s standing in the community, and/or fidelity to its educational mission.

Mrs. Carol Rivera is a science teacher who is known for innovation that brings hands-on, real-world experiences to students in the science classroom, including through forging partnerships with flagship research institutions like the Georgia Institute of Technology. Over the course of the pandemic, she provided meaningful at-home lab work and dissections, turning kitchen tables into lab stations. Her interest goes beyond just the science curriculum as she embeds topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as science and service into her lessons.
