Bishop Konzen’s Invitation to Explore Catholic Schools

Bishop Joel Konzen, S.M., former principal of Marist School and current auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, shared an invitation to parents to explore the many benefits of Catholic schools in a recent article in The Georgia Bulletin.

He wrote, “Our Catholic schools offer an excellent overall education, and they do it in an environment that includes attendance at the holy sacrifice of the Mass, religious instruction, service to the school and larger community, daily prayer, a cultivated atmosphere of respect for all students, academic preparation that is evaluated on demanding national standards, and faculty who see their work with young people as a vocation.”

He noted the positive outcomes of Catholic education saying, “The best evidence of the effects of a Catholic school education are seen in the graduates themselves, in the decisions they make, in the faith they practice, in the way they respond to challenges and demonstrate concern for others.” He continued to emphasize that the partnership between Catholic schools and families predicates success. “It is families motivated by a desire to pass on the faith to their children and to have that occur in a school environment that works hard at living the precepts of the Gospel.”

In 2015, while serving at Marist School, Bishop Konzen was recognized with the Educational Excellence Award of the National Catholic Educational Association in recognition of his contributions to the richness and diversity of American Catholic education. In November 2021, Marist School named Bishop Konzen the recipient of the school’s highest honor, the St. Peter Chanel Award, which recognizes individuals whose selflessness, exceptional support, and enthusiastic leadership have advanced the mission of Marist School in a profound and fundamental way.
