Marist School Welcomes New Head Coach of Varsity Boys Soccer

Micah Akin has been named head coach of the varsity boys soccer program at Marist School. A graduate of Marist School in the Class of 2013, Akin takes over for Brendan Murphy who steps away from the position as Marist’s all-time winningest soccer coach. Akin assisted Murphy this past season and expects to keep the assistant coaching staff in place.
“As a former Marist player, I could not be more excited to be named the next head soccer coach at Marist. Coach Murphy was such a mainstay for this program, and I look forward to building on all of the great success that he has had over the years while helping shape boys into men,” said Akin.

Coach Akin had a decorated career as a student-athlete at Marist. He was a four-year varsity standout for Coach Murphy and started both his junior and senior seasons. After graduating from Marist, Akin went on to play soccer at Oglethorpe University, where he was a starter every game of his career and finished with four all-conference selections. He was named the conference Defensive Player of the Year during his senior campaign for the Stormy Petrels. After graduating from Oglethorpe, Akin embarked on a professional career in Germany before coming back to the United States to coach full time.

While still a college student, Akin began his coaching career at Marist where he worked extensively with the younger War Eagle soccer programs. He has coached every level of soccer at Marist, including his latest stint as the head boys varsity assistant to Coach Murphy. Coach Akin also has extensive experience in the club soccer scene, working on the girls and boys side at all different levels and ages. Coach Akin currently has his USSF C License and is working towards his USSF B License. Though still young, Coach Akin already is entering his 11th year of coaching. He is the son of the current head soccer coach at Oglethorpe, Jon Akin, who also was a decorated professional soccer player.

Coach Murphy, who led the War Eagle program for over 20 years, said, “As a player for Marist, Micah was endowed with talent and leadership skills unique to someone his age. Now, as a young man with years of valuable high-level playing and coaching experience behind him, he is in a perfect position to take over the varsity boys soccer program. Marist is lucky to have him.”

Marist School Athletic Director Derek Waugh ’89 added, “I am excited to see what Micah can do with the soccer program. He has all the passion and enthusiasm that is a prerequisite to coach at Marist, and I know he will work hard to make all levels of the program excellent. We are blessed to have so many Marist School alumni who come back to coach at Marist.”

Akin’s mother, Tammy, also works at Marist School as registrar.
