Clinic Corner FAQ

List of 5 items.

  • Too sick to attend school?

If your child is exhibiting any symptoms of a contagious illness, please keep them home until symptoms resolve or you’ve seen your child’s pediatrician for diagnosis and treatment. We understand that most Marist School students are reluctant to stay home when they are ill due to concerns about missing class, getting behind on tests/assignments, and missing after school activities. Remaining at home will allow a sick student to recover faster and will minimize the chance of spreading their illness to others! If needed, reasonable accommodations to make up schoolwork that is missed due to illness are provided as outlined in Section 4.1 of the Marist Student Handbook. Please be advised, this list is not exclusive.

Students should stay home if they:

    • Have a temperature higher than 100.4°F – Students must be fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school
    • Have flu-like symptoms – These include, but are not limited to, fever, chills, body aches, fatigue, cough, runny nose, headache, gastrointestinal upset
    • Have strep throat – Students must have completed a full 24 hours of antibiotics before returning to school
    • Have tested positive for COVID-19 – In accordance with CDC guidelines, if your child tests positive for COVID-19 they must stay home and isolate for days 0-5. If your child is feeling better, they can return to school days 6-10 with recommendation to wear a mask. (Day 0 is defined as the date symptoms started, or if no symptoms, the date of positive test.) In the case of COVID-19 exposure, monitor for symptoms, consider testing at least 5 days after known exposure and follow above guidelines if positive.
    • Have vomiting or diarrhea
    • Have a persistent and frequent cough – Please note: we recognize cough as a symptom, not an illness, that can be caused by a number of things that are not always infectious (allergies/asthma vs. common cold/pneumonia/bronchitis). If your child has a frequent, persistent cough, please monitor for additional symptoms including fever, sore throat, congestion, etc.
    • Have constant pain (earache, stomachache, recent injury, etc.) that impacts their ability to concentrate
    • Have a new and spreading rash – Please note: we recognize not all skin conditions are contagious rashes (eczema, etc.). If your child has a new and spreading rash of unknown etiology, please see your child’s pediatrician for diagnosis and treatment.
    • Have lice that have not been treated – Signs of live lice include yellow, tan, or brown spots close to the scalp or on strands of hair (these are called “nits” and can resemble dandruff)

These guidelines are in accordance with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta recommendations for school attendance.
  • Does Marist School accept religious exemptions?

Marist does not accept religious exemptions in lieu of a Georgia Immunization Certificate (Form 3231). Marist students who had a religious exemption in place at the time the policy was instituted were grandfathered in.
  • What electronic health record system does Marist use?

All health forms and health related permissions and tasks for the 2023-2024 school year will be completed through Magnus, the electronic health record system.
  • Does Marist School accept medical exemptions?

Marist does accept medical exemptions in lieu of a Georgia Immunization Certificate (Form 3231). Per the Georgia Registry of Immunizations Transactions and Services (GRITS) website: “Medical exemption for a vaccine should be filled in only when there is a physical disability or condition that contraindicates immunization for that particular vaccine. There must be an annual review of medical exemptions, and certificates must be reissued with or without indication of exemption.”
  • What is the new vaccination requirement for students entering 11th grade?

Per GRITS: “Effective July 1, 2021, all students 16 years of age and older who are entering 11th grade must receive a booster dose of meningococcal conjugate (MCV4) vaccine, unless their initial dose was administered on or after their 16th birthday. Proof of vaccination must be documented on the Georgia Immunization Certificate (Form 3231).”
