Marist School's Annual Open House Showcases Vibrant Community

The event, designed to offer an immersive insight into world-class Catholic education offered by Marist School, featured a diverse array of activities catering to the varying interests of students looking to enter Marist in 7th grade for middle school or in 9th grade for high school. Guests had the opportunity to explore the school's state-of-the-art facilities, interact with students and faculty, and gain a deeper understanding of the values and features that define a Marist education.

Kicking off the event was the Opening Presentation, which included remarks from Vice President of Enrollment & Operations Mr. Jim Byrne, President J.D. Childs, and senior Adriana Acevedo. Wesley Laborde ’24 offered the opening prayer, and the Marist Singers set an uplifting tone with a captivating performance of “Route 66”, setting the stage for an eventful afternoon ahead.

Reflecting on her time at Marist, Acevedo remarked that her favorite aspect of a Marist education is “the opportunity to pursue your passions and discover new ones. I promise, if you have a particular interest, Marist not only offers it, but excels at it.” These varied opportunities were on full display throughout Open House.

Visitors were treated to customized tours guided by enthusiastic Student Ambassadors, providing a personalized glimpse into the vibrant life at Marist. For younger students in grades 7 and 8, the Middle School Experience offered an engaging ongoing session in the Marist Library, while the High School Experience Panel Discussion, moderated by Director of Admissions Mrs. Angela Elledge '88, provided valuable insights into the high school journey through the perspectives of current students Eva McLaren ’25, Afton Mosley ’24, and Josh Stephenson ’25.

The campus was abuzz with activity across various domains. From the rhythmic beats of the Marching Band in Alumni Plaza to the captivating Performing Arts Showcase at Woodruff Auditorium, attendees were treated to a variety of talent and creativity in dance and the choral arts.

Academic departments offered a look into a spectrum of excellence and innovation, with hundreds of students and their teachers providing insights into subjects ranging from English, math, science, and theology to classical languages, business, computer science, engineering, and social studies. The fine arts gallery came alive with art students and teachers demonstrating their expertise in drawing, painting, ceramics, and even offering an interactive photography experience in the dark room.

The athletic department offered a tour of their top-of-the-line facilities, while representatives from 14 sports and 69 teams featured the diverse athletic offerings at Marist in Kuhrt Gym.

The technological front was equally compelling, anchored by hands-on experiences in the Goizueta Center for Immersive Experience and Design. Attendees engaged firsthand with cutting-edge disciplines like robotics and engineering, virtual reality, and AI, gaining insight into the forefront of modern educational innovation. The immersive theater exhibit, focused on the five senses, elicited curiosity and wonder among visitors and offering a thought-provoking exploration. Moreover, guests had the chance to explore the leading edge music technology, podcasting, and broadcasting studios.

Open House was not just about exploration and engagement but also fostering a sense of community. The Marist Parents Club and Booster Club ensured everyone stayed refreshed throughout the day, offering delightful treats. Additionally, the Marist Academic Center provided a glimpse into the school's robust academic support services, available to all students.

The day culminated in a Family Mass, inviting all attendees to participate and experience the spiritual essence that forms an integral part of the Marist ethos. In his opening remarks, Childs conveyed the importance of community in empowering the individual, saying that “in the context of partnership, Marist School—with your family—draws out from within and facilitates that voyage of discovery where students can really learn to stand on their own two feet and speak with their own voice. This occurs in the context of a supportive community and in a culture of care and accountability.”

Marist School's Open House served as a testament to the school’s commitment to providing a comprehensive and formative educational experience, embracing academic excellence, spiritual growth, and community engagement. Families and prospective students departed with a deeper understanding of what it truly means to be a part of the Marist community—a place where students are prepared to be compassionate global-ready servant leaders.
