Congratulations to Marist Alumnus and Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay ’04 on Super Bowl LVI Victory

Since his time as a distinguished student-athlete at Marist School and Miami University (Ohio) and throughout his professional career, McVay has continued to inspire current and future generations through his remarkable achievements on and off the field.

A four-year starter as a quarterback and defensive back, McVay led Marist’s War Eagle football team to a state championship in 2003 and was named the Georgia AAAA Offensive Player of the Year. He was the first player in Marist School football history to rush and throw for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons.

After graduating from Marist, McVay attended Miami University where he played wide receiver from 2004-2007. He received Miami’s Scholar-Athlete Award in 2007 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Sports Studies in 2008.

After graduating, McVay began his coaching career as an assistant wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a season with the Bucs, he went on to serve as the quality control/wide receivers coach for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. McVay returned to the National Football League as an assistant tight ends coach for the Washington Redskins. He was promoted to tight ends coach in 2011, a role he held through the 2013 season. From 2014-2016, McVay served as the offensive coordinator for the team.

When McVay was named head coach of the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 at the age of 30, he became the youngest National Football League head coach in history. Following his first season in Los Angeles, McVay was named Coach of the Year by The Associated Press, becoming the youngest head coach to ever win the award. Rams Running Back Todd Gurley II brought home Offensive Player of the Year honors, while Rams Defensive Tackle Aaron Donald was named the Defensive Player of the Year, marking the first time in the 45-year history of the awards that there was a sweep of three of the league's top awards. The Rams placed eight players in the 2018 Pro Bowl, the most in a single season by the franchise since the 1999 campaign. In his second season coaching the Rams, McVay guided the team through one of its best seasons in franchise history, culminating with Super Bowl LIII in his hometown of Atlanta.

For McVay, leadership and football are family traditions, and he is perpetuating his family’s extraordinary legacy. His father, Tim McVay, was a defensive back at Indiana University and his grandfather, John McVay, served in various roles, including vice president/director of football operations, for the San Francisco 49ers from 1979-1995. In this role, his grandfather oversaw five Super Bowl championship squads and was inducted into the 49ers Hall of Fame in 2013.

McVay is remarkable not only for his ascension as one of the league's brightest coaching minds but also for his involvement with his alma mater and his community. He currently resides in Encino, California with his fiancée, Ms. Veronika Khomyn.
