A Spotlight on Fine Arts Spring Shows

The Marist Dance Company performed the "Dancing Through Time" spring show two nights only on March 30 and 31.
The opening number featured an 18th-century Irish dance, "The 'Origins' of Dance", choreographed by Mrs. Mary Ujda who is Marist’s coordinator for student community service. Each subsequent piece progressed through time, decade-hopping from style to style to showcase the varied talents of the student dancers under the expert instruction of Company Director and choreographer Mrs. Jillian Bauersfeld along with guest choreographer Ms. Prisca Lynch '13. Several pieces were choreographed by students.

"This season, the dancers worked incredibly hard to create and perform pieces that spanned the decades. It was important that the work came from them," said Mrs. Bauersfeld. "We also included the Dance class into the show, giving more opportunities for students to perform at Marist. We are grateful for a wonderful year of dance!”

One stand-out feature enjoyed by audiences was a series of video interludes, which allowed the dancers time to change costumes between each performance. The reels were composed of film and television clips of famous dance moments that set the scene for each time hop, from Patrick Swayze in 1987's "Dirty Dancing" to the iconic finale of 2006's "Step Up". View photos from Dancing Through Time.

Not to be outdone, 56 a cappella singers competed in a "Pitch Perfect"-type Sing-Off on Wednesday, April 19. Marist students, faculty, and staff have looked forward to this vocal battle since the competition first took over all three lunch periods in the Arcade in 2015. Choral Director Mrs. Sharon Coheley formed students into four groups. The song choices included Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out For a Hero", Beyoncé's "Crazy In Love", Lady Gaga's "Poker Face", and Adele's "Rollin' in the Deep", which was voted for by audiences as this year's champion. Bravo to all who participated! View photos from the Sing-Off.

The 10th-12th grade students in AP Studio Art showcased their work at Binders Art Supply in Buckhead on April 14. The items will remain on display through April 28. "This special show is driven and curated by the dedicated AP classes. Riley Kitchin '23 was the lead curator, while Michael Moran '24, Grogan Phillips '24, and many other students were also involved," said art teacher Ms. L.K. Sleat. "Be sure to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to view the works of these talented students. Don't miss out on this wonderful experience!"
