  • Season Ends for Marist with 17-7 Loss at Oconee County

The 2019 season ended for the Marist War Eagles at Oconee County, losing to the Warriors 17-7 in the 3rd Round of the AAAA State Playoffs. Marist posted an 11-2 overall record in their 34th consecutive trip to the State Playoffs under Head Coach Alan Chadwick.

Marist took the opening kickoff and got down to the Warrior’s 35 yard line but could not convert on 4th down after using almost 8 minutes of the 1st quarter, having success with their running game against the Oconee County defense. Oconee County would move the ball back to midfield before Marist would force them to punt on their first possession. Starting at their own 20-yard line after the punt, quarterback Connor Cigelske would throw an interception on the last play of the quarter and the Warrior would have excellent field position deep in Marist territory. It would take only 3 plays for the Warriors to score with quarterback Max Johnson throwing to brother Jake for a 5-yard score and a 7-0 lead. The remainder of the half saw both defenses take control, however the Warriors would attempt a 30-yard field goal on their last possession of the half after moving down to the Marist 13-yard line. Marist would block the attempt and the half would end with Oconee County up 7-0.

The Marist defense would force Oconee County to punt on their first drive of the 2nd half and Marist would move down the field, going 83-yards to even the score at 7-7, Connor Cigelske connecting with Chandler Heath on a 52-yard pass play for the score. Oconee County responded on their next possession, driving 79-yards with the Johnson brothers again connecting on a 33-yard pass play to take a 14-7 lead at the start of the 4th quarter. The Warriors forced Marist to punt on their next possession, but a short kick put Oconee County at midfield, and they marched down the field to the Marist 3-yard line. The War Eagle defense would keep them out of the end zone, but kicker Ben Johnson connected on a 20-yard field goal with just over 2 minutes remaining for a 17-7 lead. The War Eagles would be forced to throw the ball in order to get down the field quickly, but Oconee County would intercept Cigelske again and end the War Eagles’ chances of advancing in the playoffs.

The defenses would not allow much advancement on the ground as the War Eagles were help to just 90-yards rushing and the Warriors could only get 52-yards but the Warrior’s passing attacked led them to victory with 213-yards led by the Max-to-Jake Johnson combination accounting for 7 receptions and 112-yards and 2 touchdowns.
